i have been asked to find information about a MC with the name Captain A Marshall 2nd Bn MGC and 3rd July 1919 engraved on the back. I think i have found his medal card but it doesn't mention a Military Cross award. Would the date be when the medal was awarded or the date of the deed it was awarded for. I cant find him listed on the recipients of the MC, Any help would be greatly appreciated

Have you tried the National Archives for a second Medal Card?  MCs are often found on a second card and these are not always on Ancestry.

I didn't think MCs were engraved when issued. Have you checked the Gazette for an entry there?

Could only see one MIC for Alexander Marshall...

A recent thread on MC awards suggests details could be added later, at the recipients own expense.

Medal Index Cards cover the men's entitlement to campaign medals (the 1914 and 1914-15 Stars, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal). They were not intended to cover gallantry awards such as the DSO, MC, DCM and MM for which there were separate card indexes.

London Gazette entry here I think

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/31370/page/6831

Birthday Honours award so no citation .

3rd July 1919 may be when the award was presented to him .

Hi,

As per the link above, it seems that it was a 1919  King's Birthday Honours Award, with no specific citation. It looks like he was physically decorated on 11th February 1920.

At the National Archives, this might be his service file - link. Having been commissioned, he may have originally served with the 9th (Reserve) Battalion, 25th Regiment of Foot (i.e. the King’s Own Scottish Borderers), possibly passing through other battalions/units, before ending up in the Machine Gun Corps.

This might be the public announcement of his commission
