James, do you mean Alan Morris's book 'The balloonatics'?

Best wishes,

See if you can get a copy of 'Guns, Kites and Horses: Three Diaries from the Western Front', edited by Sir Sydney Giffard. Walter Giffard was a balloonist during the war (hence the 'Kites' diary set), providing a perspective from inside the basket.

Dear Ropta and Other Readers:

Those interested in observation balloons in WWI will want to know about my book, recently released on Amazon. It is the result of two years of research and eight years of writing, and has been garnering glowing reviews:

Austin in the Great War: A Nebraska Farm Boy in the 12th Balloon Company

https://www.amazon.com/Austin-Great-War-Nebraska-Balloon/dp/0999634712

Read the reviews and check it out. You will not be disappointed.

Sincerely,

Robert Eugene Johnson

I've recently come across a German account saying that they captured a half-filled observation balloon on the Crozat Canal south of Jussy on March 22nd or 23rd 1918. I wonder if anyone reading this thread knows anything about a unit using observation balloons at this time/place, or any other details?

Thank you

On observation balloons:

contemporary technical book Military Observation Balloons by Emil Widmer

Many US Government publications on balloon technical detail

On balloon busters:

Days on the Wing by Willy Coppens

Osprey title Balloon Busting Aces of WWI by Jon Guttman

Heinz Nowarra had a Fliegergeschichten pamphlet on Gontermann - Heinz Gontermann - der Ballontöter - Fliegergeschichten Band 160

On Luke specifically:

Terror of the Autumn Skies by Blaine Pardoe

The Stand by Stephen Skinner on Skinner's research on the final flight of Luke

If you're seeking information on balloon operations and companies, there's another whole long list of items
