Understanding Trench Maps

I don't think these trench systems would have been constructed for horses. Too near the front line. And it would be very surprising if they were fire trenches (no field of fire for any but the first line) or ammunition dumps. The comb-like structure stands out so clearly that it would make them an immediate target for a preparatory barrage. My guess is that they were for something insignificant from a tactical perspective - latrines??

A question of my own now.

Has anyone any idea why Oppy Trench (running north to south immediately west of Oppy Wood) would be depicted as this on this Feb. 1916 trenchmap? (It is also depicted the same on a 1917 map, but not on a 1918 map). Surely it can't be "looped" for such a long distance (this particular trench runs for approx. 9miles using this symbol!!!)

What does it mean, and why?

Thanks,

Dave.

I (eventually!!) found out the answer to my question! Quite unbelievable if true!!!! :o

(anyone any idea what I'm talking about!!! )

Dave.
