Victoria harrison Posted 12 December , 2018 Share Posted 12 December , 2018 Hi I’m new to this forum but would anyone know about HM CATSPAW. I HAD A great grandad who was on this ship when it went down. I know about him and I’m finding out more and more. i would like to see a picture of the ship I believe it was mine sweeper. I’m finding it difficult! He was called Arthur Bertie Brewer. We’ve pictures, His medals and the widows penny my great grandmother received too. As it will be 100 years next year in December that the Catspaw and my great grandad met their fate. I wanted to put a memorial to him. To have the correct facts ect. He was only 31 and a great man I’ve been told I would love to research him but have come to a stop. He did serve on HM VICTORY as we’ve a postcard of this. Many thanks if you can help, vicky

rolt968 Posted 15 December , 2018 Share Posted 15 December , 2018 (edited) In theory all Admiralty steel standard drifters looked the same. However I have been told that those in the know could distinguish the work of individual builders. Finding a picture of Catspaw will be very difficult as it was only ever an Admiralty drifter. I wonder if there are any pictures of other Admiralty steel drifters built by Ouse Ship Building. RM Edited 15 December , 2018 by rolt968
horatio2 Posted 15 December , 2018 Share Posted 15 December , 2018 (edited) This link purports to be of the "trawler" HMS CASCADE. CASCADE was, in fact, an Ouse SB Admiralty steel drifter, the sister of HMS CATSPAW. They were launched a month apart in July and August 1918. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/rp13614-Royal-Navy-Trawler-HMS-Cascade-built-1918-photo-6x4-/390644746028 Edited 15 December , 2018 by horatio2
MaxD Posted 15 December , 2018 Share Posted 15 December , 2018 Good detective work Horatio2 ! I was working my way through the nine Admiralty steel drifters of similar spec "Ouse SB. 94grt/199 tons (deep), 93(oa), 86x18x9. TE 270 ihp, 9kts" (Naval history.net) but hadn't landed upon Ebay.
