mbriscoe Posted 9 December , 2018 Share Posted 9 December , 2018 Full set of images on FLICKR Unusually the names are combined for WWi and WWIi with nothing to indicate which war they are from - I suspect the memorial was built after WWII but not been able find any date. Quote Cardross War Memorial, Main Road, Cardross The memorial just reads (i.e. does not identify location etc) OUR GLORIOUS DEAD 1914 – 1919 1939 – 1945 There are eight plates each with five names, does not distinguish between WWI and WWII names – i.e. 40 names One holder of the VC commemorated on first plate. Site Type WAR MEMORIAL (20TH CENTURY) Canmore ID 197775 Site Number NS37NW 39 NGR NS 34511 77598 Council ARGYLL AND BUTE Parish CARDROSS (ARGYLL AND BUTE) Former Region STRATHCLYDE Former District DUMBARTON Former County DUNBARTONSHIRE
Malcolm12hl Posted 9 December , 2018 Share Posted 9 December , 2018 Cardross was bombed on the night of 5 May 1941. The church was among the buildings hit (if memory serves, its ruins have been preserved as a memorial), so perhaps an earlier war memorial was destroyed at the same time. Yes seen the ruin of the church I think. That could explain it, I will see it any newspaper reports on the church to see if they mention war memorial being destroyed.
