JMB1943 Posted 6 December , 2018 Share Posted 6 December , 2018 I have seen photos of recruiting posters that offer 6 shillings/ day for ASC drivers. This was obviously a rare and very valuable skill during GW. How does that rate of pay compare to the lower officer ranks, below field grade? Ron Clifton Posted 6 December , 2018 Share Posted 6 December , 2018 Second Lieutenants in the infantry and ASC were paid 7s 6d per day. Those in other combat arms were paid 8s 6d per day. Rates of pay for full lieutenants and captains were slightly higher. You have to bear in mind that army pay, especially for other ranks, consisted of two or more elements. Regimental pay was a basic pay according to rank, but soldiers could qualify for additional proficiency pay in the cavalry, artillery and infantry, and "corps pay" in other arms, which reflected the level of skill at the soldier's trade. There was also "flying pay" which could also apply to men other than the RFC. Some soldiers, notably the tunnellers of the RE, received special higher rates of pay, negotiated by their "founder", Major Norton Griffiths, to reflect the particularly hazardous nature of their work. Other special rates of pay could apply to other men possessed of special skills urgently needed by the Army. Ron
Scalyback Posted 6 December , 2018 Share Posted 6 December , 2018 Mechanical driver rather than horse driver. Ron notes about the tunnellers having a high rate of pay, the chemical section also had some high rates of pay. Going on today there are some specialist roles done by NCO's/WO's that make them laugh at officer "pay".
Muerrisch Posted 6 December , 2018 Share Posted 6 December , 2018 My lovely Gpa was a Driver MT. Two pints, and a packet of Woodbines, every day until he died at 96 years of age. Fortunately he told me about his war. I do hope he enjoyed his bounty.
JMB1943 Posted 8 December , 2018 Author Share Posted 8 December , 2018 Thanks to all for the information. Previous unhappy search experiences on GWF have left me disposed to not waste the time these days. But, thank you kenf48 for taking the time!
