mbriscoe Posted 4 December , 2018 Share Posted 4 December , 2018 The memorial is a locked enclosure so not able to get very near - I reckon I did well to get a readable copy of the names! Full set on FLICKR Quote Helensburgh War Memorial Memorial is behind locked gates with no information on how to get access nearer to it. Malcolm12hl Posted 5 December , 2018 Share Posted 5 December , 2018 I have been following your photographic odyssey with great interest, and was on the point of asking if you were going to stray far enough south to cover Helensburgh when you beat me to the punch. Having recently published my book We Will Remember Them, on the First World War dead of my current home (the Surrey village of Thames Ditton), I was thinking of following it up with a Helensburgh project (the town being my mother's place of birth, and my first home). Your splendid photographs give me all the inspiration I need to get me started. The inscriptions themselves give me more information than I had starting the Thames Ditton project as they include rank and year of death, which will make individual identifications much easier. Thank you again for your tremendous work. Malcolm

Malcolm When I photographed Helensburgh some years ago, I did consider contacting the council about getting better coverage but I am not down there very often so never got around to ii. Perhaps when it warms up a bit! I started years ago by trying to identify the names on our local memorial, then ones in wider area but it is very difficult because there will often be a number with the same name. In recent years, a lot of places having been producing some excellent books identifying the names on their local memorial. It's nice when someone contacts you seeing their relatives name in a photograph of the memorial, always means more than just seeing in a list. mbriscoe Posted 21 May , 2019 Author Share Posted 21 May , 2019 I found the gates unlocked so able to take some better pictures, all added to the FLICKR album.
