According to his MIC he was "Malby" and had been MID and awarded the DSO (images below courtesy Ancestry free access)

Appear to be some out there, not sure how you view them?

Haven't done too much digging David, but there appears to be a Malby Crofton, which is Malby Edward Crofton's son and there is the Malby RH Crofton too.

Thank you all for this information. What I can say here is that I have a 1919 photo of an officer of the 317Th Bge R.F.A taken in my village in Belgium (Border with France). By consulting the archives of the War Diaries of this Bde, there are 3 Officers, Lt Col M Crofton, Major A.L Smith and Maj H. C Allen ... I would like to know which one is in this picture.

The Officer by my reckoning is a Major or Lt Col with an MC ribbon...capbadge isn't that clear so assuming he is still RFA.

You have

Henry Cecil Allen MC, attained the rank of Captain on his Medal index card.. So may have acting or Temp Major perhaps.

Or Arthur Leonard Smith MC, attaining the rank of Major on his MIC

My money is on the latter.

You could send an email to Rossall School asking if it has a photo of Malby Crofton.

I am told that it might be Richard Cecil Milman CROFTON MC (80159)...
Temporarily appointed Major in 1919? Is that possible?
Thank you.
