Stannington Roll Of Honour

Can anybody tell me what role, HMS Desperate played in the first world war.

I have recently seen a letter addressed to H G Pond, who died when HMS Penarth was sunk by a mine. The letter was sent approx 1915-17.

Its addressed to HMS Desperate. I have also seen a picture of HMS Desperate, which looks very old. Was it a training ship ?

Thanks in advance

Robert.
