Remembered Today:

15pdr. Fuze Identification.

Hi,

I purchased this 15pdr shrapnel shell dated (19)10?

I've looked online to identify the fuze. It appears to be a No.65A, but unlike others I've found the timer ring is graduated from 0-18 secs.

Any help to positively identify the fuze or markings on the shell base would be welcomed.

Hi GWF1967,

Nice shell. I am no expert on this subject but the fuze appears to be a No.56 Mk. IV.  Below is a photo of the relevant page from "Treatise on Ammunition, War Office, 1915" in case it helps.  The marking EOC stands for Elswick Ordnance Corporation and I think the IV after that confirms the fuze is the Mk.IV.

Regards,

Michael.

The fuze is a No.56 MkIV made by Armstrong Whitworth (EOC monogram).     Edit: as the drawing provided shows...

The projectile is 15pr MkV, made of forged steel (FS) .

Many thanks for deciphering the base markings and confirming the type of fuze. Much appreciated.
