johnwpuzey Posted 16 January , 2005 Share Posted 16 January , 2005 My great Uncle was in the Army Service Unit and died on January 8th 1916. It is thought he was on a troopship going to Salonika which was torpedoed and that the ship was called the Palermo. No verification of this however. Does anyone know anything about this action? robbie Posted 16 January , 2005 Share Posted 16 January , 2005 Have you seen this reference to HMAT (Her Majesty's Australian Transport) Palermo? A 56. HMAT Palermo 7,597 tons. 14 knots. P & O SN Co London Commonwealth control ended 10 January 1917. Troop transports were requisitioned by the Commonwealth government for the purpose of transporting the AIF overseas but in addition to carrying troops, horses and military stores they also carried wool, metals, meat, flour and other foodstuffs, mainly for Britain and France. The fleet consisted mainly of British steamers and a few captured enemy ships. http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-confli..._transports.htm Robbie
