Hello Cyril

The photograph:

The recipient (your great uncle) has the Fouled Anchor insignia of a Leading Rate ("Killick") on his left sleeve, immediately below which he has a single good conduct stripe awarded for 4 yrs' good service. Can't make out trade badge on his right sleeve.

His medals are the common WW1 pair of the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. Since he was not born until 1904, this combination points to his having served aboard a warship involved in the Russian Civil War (1917-21) rather than having seen service in WW1 proper.

You can get his service papers up to 1928 from the National Archives under ADM188. A researcher should be able to do this cheaply and easily - for about £5; a little more time and expense if you don't know his service number (which will be impressed on his service medals).
