duncanross Posted 13 October , 2018 Share Posted 13 October , 2018 Does anybody have any information about this ship? I am researching its working life and eventual wrecking off the coast of south Wales, UK in 1917. SS Leysian's function during the war was a horse transport ship. Ideally I am looking for photographs of the ship or stories of the men who sailed on her. Many thanks Duncan Ross

Michael Lowrey Posted 14 October , 2018 Share Posted 14 October , 2018 (edited) The basics: Serak was built in 1906 by Armstrong, Whitworth & Co., Ltd., Newcastle for the Deutsche Dampfs. Ges. "Kosmos", Hamburg and of 4,680 grt. In August 1914, the steamer was seized at Swansea. In 1915, the ship was renamed Leysian and operated by F. Leyland & Co., Ltd., Liverpool as crown nominees. MKC Posted 14 October , 2018 Share Posted 14 October , 2018 HT Leysian was, as you have noted, a horse transport. It was used for the transport of remounts from the USA & Canada to the UK prior to being wrecked. The GRT as far as the British Admiralty was concerned, was 4,703 tons. Date of loss was 20 February 1917. Didn't find a listing of it in Lloyds War Losses. Mike

Mike There wouldn't be a listing in Lloyd's War Losses or British Vessels Lost at Sea as Leysian wasn't sunk by a war-related cause — running aground/wrecking doesn't count.
