BereniceUK Posted 23 September , 2018 Share Posted 23 September , 2018 The Bank Street Chapel and Sunday School roll of honour has been discovered in a storage area at Bury Unitarian Church, where it had been since the present church building was opened in 1974, on the same site as Bank Street Chapel. The plan is to put it on permanent display, probably on a staircase wall. In addition to the 40 who died, there are 201 names listed of those who served. There's a coffee morning every Saturday at the church, 10-12, if anyone wants to go see the roll. Richard Ainsworth Fred Ashworth Fred Atkinson Henry J. Barrett Samuel Bridge James R. I. BereniceUK Posted 23 September , 2018 Author Share Posted 23 September , 2018 This was in storage for 44 years, and completely forgotten about. Makes me wonder what else is hidden away in some churches, schools, hospitals, etc., where their memorials or rolls of honour are listed as being lost. Jim Strawbridge Posted 23 September , 2018 Share Posted 23 September , 2018 I see that the name of Mary Clough is on the Roll of Honour. She is one of the ladies that I have been researching. She was from a Bury family (her father was a steam engine fitter in 1891 but moved on to be the manager of a woollen manufactory by 1911). After training Mary worked as a hospital nurse at Victoria Hospital, Blackpool. She enlisted into the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Sevice and died on Malta on the 12th October 1916 of dysentery.

Kitchener's Bugle Posted 8 January , 2019 Share Posted 8 January , 2019 What great Condition it seems to be in! I wonder how many similar things are secreted away in "storage"?
Guest Posted 1 February , 2019 Share Posted 1 February , 2019 We were amazed to find it in perfect condition after nearly fifty years with its face to the wall in a dusty attic. As the post says: we're always open on a Saturday morning and would be happy to arrange to let people see it at other times. We're currently working on getting our records of church members up to date, so the extra information on some of the people named on the roll is really welcome. Wilkinson Hello Bernice, A fascinating find, bizarrely I have recently been in touch with the Great Nephew of Henry J Barrett, who was in the MGC. I would be interested to know if either of his brothers, Thomas or Walter Barrett feature on the list of others who served? Regards Andy
