edergole Posted 28 May , 2003 Share Posted 28 May , 2003 I have a prayer book (in French) taken from 'The Convent Arras 1917' I believe by my great-grandfather. He was a member of The RAMC, attached I am led to believe to one of the Ulster Divisions Field Ambulances. He certainly went overseas on the same day as the Ulster Division but as his service records haven't survived I cannot be sure. Does anyone out there know whether or not the Ulster Division was ever stationed in Arras. Incidentally, any ideas where the convent was? Is it still there? Any one any pictures? I was in Arras a few years back but didn't know the connection then. Thanks Joe
Conor Dodd Posted 28 May , 2003 Share Posted 28 May , 2003 I will have a look to see if the 36th Ulster Div. was in Arras could it be that the convent was part of the Cathedral I have 2 photos of it if it is one before and during the war. Paul Reed Posted 31 May , 2003 Share Posted 31 May , 2003 The Ulster Division never served at Arras - it was on the Somme 1915-16, then Flanders 1916-17, then Cambrai 1917, and St Quentin 1918 and back to the Somme for March 1918. There are/were a number of Convents in and around Arras - you will need to be more precise to find the one you want.
