22354 Private Walter Leach, Loos Memorial

22354 Private W Leech, Vieille-Chapelle New Military Cemetery, Lacouture

both died on the 10th August 1918 and with the 2nd Battalion Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment)

Two man, died on the same day with the same Battalion and Regiment, with the same service number

with similar sounding surname

does it appear to be an error by the CWGC

Appears so - the effects only have one man but date is 1 day out.

Actually, looking at the concentration document raises further issues:

Soldiers effects  as W Leech

MIC                    as W Leech

SDGW               as Leach

His service papers are on Ancestry

His body was exhumed from the battlefield after the war

reburied in Vieille-Chapelle New Military Cemetery, Lacouture

It would seem so.

The GRO index to overseas army (other ranks) deaths 1914 - 1921 shows:

surname = Leach

surname = Leech

Yes. Throughout the service papers the surname is consistently spelt as Leech, and there's a couple of signatures that read that way too.

Thank you for your replies.

How do I approach the CWGC and explain about the error

jamie

You can email them via their site. I would expect that the fact the grave form says Pte M D Leech may mean that they'll want to look deeper in to it.

thank you for your reply, I think I may contact them after my holiday next week.

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, when I was playing around the CWGC today.
