A sawn down 18pdr shell case with another 18 per  base fashioned into a lid.

A penny set into a knob.

Tobacco box possibly.

Or possibly small tea-caddy?

I have seen one very similar to this, made for a WW1 veteran by the Chinese labourers under his command. It has a very close-fitting lid, making it airtight, and it is indeed a tobacco jar.

Thanks guys, I bought from a guy that sell sort of ww1 memorabilia, so probably it belong to this era, the lid is quite stiff to be removed as I did managed to push it a bit on but now can’t really take it off, there is sort of white powder around it and possibly inside it, any idea what this powder is?

many thanks again guys

Dried-up Brasso (liquid metal polish) is the most likely origin of the white powder.

You hope :innocent: Just don't tell it to the law.
