Ilbury Welsh Posted 31 July , 2018 Share Posted 31 July , 2018 To me it looks like pieces of shell cases put together to make a circular box. John
Stoppage Drill Posted 31 July , 2018 Share Posted 31 July , 2018 A sawn down 18pdr shell case with another 18 per base fashioned into a lid. A penny set into a knob. Tobacco box possibly.

Ron Clifton Posted 31 July , 2018 Share Posted 31 July , 2018 I have seen one very similar to this, made for a WW1 veteran by the Chinese labourers under his command. It has a very close-fitting lid, making it airtight, and it is indeed a tobacco jar. Ron

Stoppage Drill Posted 31 July , 2018 Share Posted 31 July , 2018 Dried-up Brasso (liquid metal polish) is the most likely origin of the white powder.
