Hi,

I am trying to research a soldier who is listed on CWGC as being KIA on the 20/04/1917 and being in the 17th Machine gun battalion, which appears not to have existed until 1918. So should I be looking at the 17th MG Coy or the 50/51/52 MG coys that went on to be the 17th MC Bn. His name is Luther MARTIN (should be MARTEN) 44043. Any assistance gratefully received.

The soldiers' effects records have him as 171st MGC, which makes more sense. The effects also have him as Marten.

Here is the reference:

WO 95/2983 171 Infantry Brigade

WO 95/2983 2/6 Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment 1915 Aug. - 1916 Mar.
WO 95/2983 2/6 Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment 1917 Feb. - 1919 May
WO 95/2983 1/8 Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment 1918 Feb. - 1919 May
WO 95/2983 2/8 Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment 1915 Aug. - 1916 Feb.
WO 95/2983 2/8 Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment 1917 Jan. - 1918 Jan.
WO 95/2983 Brigade Machine Gun Company 1917 Feb. - 1918 Feb.
WO 95/2983 Brigade Trench Mortar Battery 1917 Feb. - 1918 Dec.

It can be downloaded from the Kew website, www.nationalarchives.gov.uk, for £3.50, or free from Ancestry if you have a subscription. As you can see, there are several diaries in the same box so you will have to put in a suffix, probably /8, to get the right one.
