DCLI Posted 9 January , 2005 Share Posted 9 January , 2005 The heading says it all. I want a definitive book on the role of the RE during the war. Not a history book a personal accounts book. regards
Terry_Reeves Posted 10 January , 2005 Share Posted 10 January , 2005 There is no definitive book I'm afraid. However you may wish to try John Glubb's " Into Battle" which is a good personal account of life on the Western front with an RE Field Company and Donald Portaway's "Memoirs of an Academic Old Contemptible" approximately half of which is about life in RE signals units in the same theatre. Martin S Fox's " Corporals All", is a good personal account of life with the RE Special Brigade, but this was privately published. There are several copies held in various national institutions, as well as the RE Library at Chatham. The first two can easily be found second-hand on the internet. Robert Dunlop Posted 11 January , 2005 Share Posted 11 January , 2005 'History of the New Zealand Engineers' gives a good account of the variety of roles of the engineers. It mainly covers the period 1916-1918, which is when the New Zealand Division was active on the Western Front. Recently re-published by Naval and Military Press.
