In first picture, the top bayonet has what appears to be some sort of button at the tip

Is this a result of wear and tear , or has it been altered - maybe as some sort of practice model ??

Yes, usually (off the top of my head!) with Gew.71, but some with Gew.88 - and possibly Bavarian Werder? In UK so no books to hand!
