charlesmessenger Posted 13 November , 2002 Share Posted 13 November , 2002 Oppy is approximately 20km north-east of Arras and exists today. Charles M
Paul Reed Posted 13 November , 2002 Share Posted 13 November , 2002 I would have said Oppy is probably nearer 10km from Arras; it is just north of the main Arras - Douai road. On this find Gavrelle and go north; you will see Oppy and Oppy Wood.
Cliff. Hobson Posted 13 November , 2002 Author Share Posted 13 November , 2002 To charlesmessenger/ Paul Reed. Thankyou for your information, if you are curious the citation for Sam Hague's D.C.M reads " Near Oppy on the 6th October, 1918 he led his platoon with consumate skill and boldness. Having removed noiselessly three enemy booby traps, he dashed into the enemy post, completely surprising them and capturing seven prisoners. He then reorganised his platoon and cosolidated new positions under heavy machine gun and rifle fire. Later he beat off strong enemy counter attacks on his post and successfully maintained it until the line was established. He set a most inspiring example and did splendid work." I knew Sam Hague, a very self effacing character, and his Son said, he never really talked about the awards.
