daggers Posted 12 June , 2018 Share Posted 12 June , 2018 I came across an obituary in 'The Stage' for an actor, Aubrey Mather, who died in 1958 aged 72. It listed many of his stage and film productions and said that in WW1 he had run a pierrot troupe, 'The Tanks'. I found a brief set of papers for him in Ancestry, private in RAMC from November 1915, acting corporal and acting sergeant, but no indication of overseas service and no MIC. Is anything known of this troupe? Daggers
IPT Posted 12 June , 2018 Share Posted 12 June , 2018 According to The Stage of 9/12/1915 he was based at Lower Southern, Dartford. I think this means that he would have been looking after German prisoners of war. By 1919, he was back appearing on the stage as an actor. The name "The Tanks" may date the troupe to late 1916. Perhaps it was just a hospital troupe to entertain the patients?
