emmagee Posted 8 January , 2005 Share Posted 8 January , 2005 Ive spent the last two years trying to follow this mans career. He is possibly a distant cousin and he happens to share my name . Leonard was killed in action at Cherisy on 3rd May 1917. I cannot trace a photo, nor does he appear in the War diary(An O/R I dont suppose he would). Is there anyone out there who knows of or is related to anyone who served in 55 Coy(part of 55 brigade,18 Division). I have walked the battlefield and pieced together his last hours. I would just like to tie up a few loose ends. He has no known grave and Appears on the Arras memorial along with his 7 comrades who also died that day. Are there any photos of 55 coy out there?.I also know of two photos of Cherisy. Are there any more?
Stephenb Posted 8 January , 2005 Share Posted 8 January , 2005 Hello, I'm afraid I can't add anything on this man but I do have a medal group in my collection to Second Lieutenant G.H. Gristwood, 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regment. Maybe this is of interest to you as well?
Jonathan Saunders Posted 8 January , 2005 Share Posted 8 January , 2005 Another Forum Pal, Trenchwalker has a friend who has researched various lines of the Gristwood family ... it being an uncommon name. Suggest you pm Trenchwalker and he can put you in contact with him (I think his name was Lee but cant remember if it was Gristwood as well). Paul Reed Posted 8 January , 2005 Share Posted 8 January , 2005 I don't know if you have visited Wancourt British Cemetery? It contains a very high number of unknown MGC graves; men who were found when the battlefields were cleared or were buried in isolated graves, largely by the Germans, during the 1917 fighting. Most come from the Wancourt - Guemappe - Cherisy area. Maybe this is where your relative and the others from 55 Coy rest? We will never know, but interesting speculation. Greg Bloomfield Posted 5 March , 2006 Share Posted 5 March , 2006 Emmagee I've just finished researching a lad who was in 54 Coy. I'd hit a brick wall until a Pal put me on to Jim Parker, a MGC specialist. Have a word on Jim.mgc@blueyonder.co.uk He's really worth a chat. chrislotr Posted 10 March , 2006 Share Posted 10 March , 2006 Hi Lee, just saw your post, my grandfather was in the MGC, either 53rd, 54th or the 55th Coy, 18th Division. Do you know L / Cpl L.W. Gristwood's MGC service number, as I would like to know if it is close to my grandfather's, which would give me more of an idea to what Coy he was in, it would be appreciated. I would also say that Greg's advice to contact Jim Parker is definetly worth while, he helped me a lot. Regards Chris
