Pat Atkins Posted 23 May , 2018 Share Posted 23 May , 2018 I'd be glad of some help deciphering A. Shayell's rank on this 1911 Ireland census return, if anybody has any ideas? He's the first name on the page, service number 1177. The return is for the 2nd South Lancs at Buttevant; my grandfather is listed on the same page as a Lance-corporal. Cheers, Pat. clk Posted 23 May , 2018 Share Posted 23 May , 2018 Hi Pat, I think that it might read 2.M.S. The 2 being similar to those in 4422 Davies, and the M similar to that in McCovey. I don't know much about ranks, but presumably it's higher than a sergeant. Regards Chris
BillyH Posted 23 May , 2018 Share Posted 23 May , 2018 Could be Quartermaster Sergeant. When I was in school all those year ago (and rationing was still in operation) I was first taught to write a 'Q' a bit like that. BillyH.
Pat Atkins Posted 24 May , 2018 Author Share Posted 24 May , 2018 That's a good suggestion, thanks BillyH. Although not annotated as such, and I'm not sure about this, the census seems to have grouped by Company. As an aside, my grandfather did his 7 as an infantryman and then transferred to the RE Signals Service in 1913, but he ended his career as a CQMS - perhaps he took career inspiration from seeing a QM's relatively cushy life at this early stage! Cheers, Pat.
