Remembered Today:

1/1 SMD CCS

Hi.

I am researching Pte John Griffen (Griffin) 23738. 7th Bedfords who according to the war diary 18/6/16...

"No 23738 Pte Griffin J, C Coy, shot himself, died in Field Ambulance "

From the soldiers effects database he died in The 1/1 SMD CCS. Obviously CCS is Casualty Clearing Station but I am having trouble with 1/1 SMD. Any further info appreciated.

Thanks

Looks like it may be CCS56 (initially known as South Midland CCS). There was a second one too, CCS 61, also known as South Midland CCS. From dates in LLT only CCS56 would have been operating in Jun 1916 (Amiens). War Diary ref WO95/417/4. It may or may not have casualty details, most didn't.
