Martyn Gibson Posted 7 January , 2005 Share Posted 7 January , 2005 Hi Pals, Can anyone tell me are there any books of reference to allied aces that cover the French, Belgians, Italians, Americans and Russian. Also I was reading an earlier posting and saw the nickname of 'Moth' which intriguied me and got me to wondering how he gained that name? Is there a list anywhere of nicknames that pilots or other aircrew had? Thanks in advance Regards Martyn
Guest Pete Wood Posted 7 January , 2005 Share Posted 7 January , 2005 The Grub Street books sound like they would meet your needs: http://www.grubstreet.co.uk/wwi_hardback.htm Other forum members will, I'm sure, be able to offer alternative titles. Dolphin Posted 9 January , 2005 Share Posted 9 January , 2005 Martyn On another post, I recommended the recent Osprey Publications on the Aces. The ones that should cover your needs are: No 33 Nieuport Aces of World War I by Norman Franks No 39 SPAD VII Aces of World War I by Jon Guttman No 42 American Aces of World War I by Norman Franks No 47 SPAD XII/XIII Aces of World War I by Jon Guttman There are two other excellent books: The Imperial Russian Air Service in World War I by Durkota, Darcey and Kulikov; and Italian Aces of World War I and Their Aircraft by Gentilli, Iozzi and Varriale. They're both very detailed, and include dozens of hitherto unseen photographs. Regards Gareth
