harps Posted 4 May , 2018 Share Posted 4 May , 2018 Rest in Peace, Lance Corporal John Flynn, killed today 100 years ago. John Flynn enlisted to the 7th Battalion, Border Regiment on the 2nd Sept 1914. His previous occupation is stated as a Miner, however he had previously played Rugby League (with the nickname 'Jack Dandy') for various teams in the Cumbria area, and had been capped for England at least once, in 1908, as Scrum Half against New Zealand. A game that England won 18-16. After enlisting, he was promoted to Sgt before reverting back to Private prior to being deployed to France. He was wounded in action 09/09/17 and returned to duty 13/10/17. He was killed in action on 4 May 1918, the War Diary stating 'Shell of H.V. Gun killed Corporal Flynn of R.P and the Colonels servant outside the H.Q. Mess.' Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
