johntanner Posted 30 April , 2018 Share Posted 30 April , 2018 (edited) Just wondering if anyone can come up with a more plausible history for this man that I can. He proceeded to France with the 2nd Bn on 6/7 October 1914. He died of illness on Malta 21 July 1916, on the strength of the 3rd (Res) Bn.. My guess is wounded in France, then posted to 1/5th Bn at Suvla or in Egypt. Taken ill and evacuated to Malta. No records I can trace other than the medal rolls. charlie962 Posted 30 April , 2018 Share Posted 30 April , 2018 (edited) John Daily Casualty List 5/1/15, Report received 26/11/14 Wounded, Bedfordshire Regt Charlie I see this is on PaulNixon's excellent site Edited 30 April , 2018 by charlie962
HarryBrook Posted 1 May , 2018 Share Posted 1 May , 2018 His age given as 36 years on his C.W.G.C. record is incorrect. In the 1911 census he was with 2nd Bn. Bedfordshire Regt. in the West Indies when his age was given as 24, born Enfield, Middlesex. The baptism register for (St. Andrew) Enfield states that he was born on 26 May 1887, and baptised there on 17 June 1887. His mother was Emma and his father James. johntanner Posted 3 May , 2018 Author Share Posted 3 May , 2018 Fantastic, given what I'm doing I should have rechecked the baptisms but the casualty list looks to bear out my assumptions. Thanks again. John
steve fuller Posted 24 May , 2018 Share Posted 24 May , 2018 The 1/5th took on 2 large drafts early in 1916 while rebuilding in Egypt after being decimated on Gallipoli. These were almost all former 1st and 2nd Battalion men who had recovered from wounds sustained early on, which fits nicely. Illness was a big problem for the northern European troops in Egypt of course and many troops died from illness on board or on Malta while being shipped home.
