Moriaty Posted 29 April , 2018 Share Posted 29 April , 2018 Captain Edward Victor Whiteway MC 12th (Bermondsey) Service Battalion East Surrey Regiment, at the time of his death attached to the 122nd Bde HQ Formerly, for 3 weeks, Inspector of Motor Cycle Dispatch Riders Scotland Yard (Special Police) Formerly Private 3233 Royal Fusiliers, Formerly TStaff Sergeant Mjr RASC SS/5494 in 23rd Division Died of wounds 28 April 1918, aged 29 Interred at Etaples Military Cemetery, France, grave reference XXVIII.K.7. His headstone reads “Rest eternal rest grant him Lord and let light perpetual shine upon him” Son of Henry and Edith Whiteway of Slewton House, Whimple, Devon and Kennington [51 Kennington Oval] Commemorated on the war memorials at Whimple and St Mark's Oval, London and with a family plaque in St Marks Quite by chance I was in St Mark's Church yesterday and noticed that it was the centenary of Victor Whiteway's death from wounds. His sister had been granted permission to visit him at No1 Red Cross Hospital, Le Touquet shortly before his death.
