Book about Americans in the Meuse-Argonne region

Hello everybody,

I'm looking for a book about the American soldiers who fought in the Meuse-Argonne region at the end of 2018.

On the web I've found these as the main ones:

- Days of Perfect Hell: The U.S. 26th Infantry Regiment in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, October-November 1918 by Peter Belmonte

- To Conquer Hell: The Meuse-Argonne, 1918 by Edward G. Lengel

- Forty-Seven Days: How Pershing's Warriors Came of Age to Defeat the German Army in World War I Hardcover – March 1, 2016 by Mitchell Yockelson

Can you suggest me which, in your opinion, is the best one?

Do you know if they can be downloaded for free?

Thank you very much,

Alberto

Lengel is good, I haven't read the others. They are all recently published so think you'll have to pay for them. You could also read this thread posted in January:

P.S. Think you mean 1918 not 2018 in your post

Memory as usual fails me but you might look for books a few yrs old about Sgt. Alvin York. earned the Medal of Honor on Oct. 8, 1918. He was G Co., 328th US Infantry 82nd Infantry Divn. I read one out a few ys ago covering the action & his unit.

An earlier classic is Ferrell's  America's Deadliest Battle

If you want some more contemporary accounts (and free!)

almost any US Divisional history from the AEF will have a big section on the Meuse-Argonne, for example here's a report about the experiences of my local lot with gas

http://www.33rdinfantrydivision.org/documents/74477484-WWI-33rd-Infantry-Division.pdf

If you go to Archive dor org and search WWI infantry divisions you will find a lot of histories

and a film

Of those three I’d definitely go with To Conquer Hell; it’s much more comprehensive than the others.

Thanks for that... I was hesitating between Yockelson and Lengel... I'll follow your advice!!

Of course, they’re both good and worth reading!

I'd support that recommendation.

I'd recommend A Companion to the Meuse-Argonne Campaign, edited by Ed Lengel. Unfortunately, its still quite expensive.

In Dutch but giving a detailed day-by-day account of the battle in the Argonne Forest and the area towards Champagne September-November 1918. Each day is explained telling the German side as well as the Franco-American side. Primary (archive) sources have been used, it's not based on other books: http://argonne1418.be/tussen aire en aisne 1918.html

The book is richly illustrated, as are the other Argonne books: www.argonne1418.be

regards,
