Mark,

He appears to be a Lance Corporal with what appears to be eight good conduct chevrons! I think six means 28 years service....don't know about eight though. Perhaps someone else could oblige?

They seem to be going up in 5s, so 8 stripes could be 38 years. If he joined as a boy, that would make him around 53. (Looks about right?) If the photo is from 1900, say, he would have joined around 1862. He (& the Sgt) appear to have some campaign ribbons up, though I don`t know where his regiment got to in those years. At first glance, I thought it was perhaps a hoax, but I don`t think so now. I`ve no reason to think it`s not a genuine 8 LSGC stripe man! Unless anyone else..... :rolleyes: Phil B

I have a photo taken in Green Howards Museum showing two men, a LCpl and a Pte, 1903. Each has 8 good conduct badges. Said to have 85 years service between them.

I regret that I have never seen rules for more than 6 badges.
