The SA Motor Cyclist Corps was formed in 1916 by Colonel JM Fairweather DSO of the Rand Light Infantry (the Rand LI had been raised as the Transvaal Cycle and Motor Corps from the cyclist element of the Transvaal Scottish) recruited from employees of the SA Railways)

Four hundred BSA motorcycles were sent out from the UK for them, adapted to carry 140 lbs of kit besides the rider.

They wore the Railways and Harbours Brigade cap badge modified to show the Corps title on the scroll. They served in the East African Campaign and were wound up in 1918.
