Why did men enlist in the first weeks of the war?

Hi Phil  and Retlaw

I am not questioning your assertions that 'a lot of men died from late 1917 until the end'(I know your posts too well to do that), rather I am questioning my own pre-conceptions as laid out above.  It would be good to know more about the late 1917 conscription ratio relative to Kitchener men.  Harry Patch was a 1917 conscript as we all know.  There must have been many like him (and perhaps just as disgruntled).

Between conscription and voluntary enlistment the figure was roughly 46:54 across the whole war.

The Annual Return for the war years handily breaks down the figure to pre-Ministry of National Service and post. This was Nov 1917. It also provides a breakdown of volunteers/conscripts prior to Nov 1917.

I don't think there aren't any readily accessible figures that would break down the type of men serving at any specific point, just the gross figures.

Thanks Craig.  That one stops me and makes me think.
