GrenPen Posted 23 February , 2018 Share Posted 23 February , 2018 Under the terms of the Naval agreement of 1903, residents of Australia and New Zealand served in the Australian Squadron of the Royal Navy and enlisted locally. These men had a four digit service number prefixed by "ANF". The cost of the squadron was to be shared in the proportions of Britain one-half, Australia five-twelfths, and New Zealand one-twelfth. This contribution was authorised in New Zealand by the Australian and New Zealand Defence Act 1903. As a British force, the Australia Squadron ceased on 4 October 1913, when the ships of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) entered Sydney Harbour for the first time. The Naval Defence Act 1913 authorised the establishment of the New Zealand Naval Forces. They were to be enlisted and maintained on a voluntary basis and required to serve either within or beyond the limits of New Zealand. The New Zealander element of the Australian Squadron were transferred across to the NZNF contingent of the Royal Navy. For some of these men, their enlistment papers are in the Australian archives, but have been digitised and are free to view online via the Australian War memorial website:https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C1417974
