FifeWar Posted 16 February , 2018 Share Posted 16 February , 2018 When Elizabeth Johnston, a QMAAC telephonist from Anstruther, Fife, was buried with full military honours (South African Highlanders firing party; army chaplain etc)in St Severs on 30 December 1918, her coffin was brought to the graveside covered with the Scottish saltire (in conformity with her wishes.) How unusual was it for the Scottish flag to feature in a British military funeral like this?
Admin DavidOwen Posted 16 February , 2018 Admin Share Posted 16 February , 2018 Might not mean anything but a search for "Saltire coffin" or "Saltire Funeral" filtered to ww1 on the IWM search objects site yields no pictures.
Ron Abbott Posted 16 February , 2018 Share Posted 16 February , 2018 Don't know how prevalent it was then, but it still continues to this day. A google search turns up many articles and photos relating to the death and funeral of PTE Kevin Elliott (2009 Afghanistan) : - https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/the-coffin-of-soldier-private-kevin-elliott-of-the-black-news-photo/805320330#/the-coffin-of-soldier-private-kevin-elliott-of-the-black-watch-leaves-picture-id805320330 I don't see why it would be considered unusual.
