Dean Posted 13 February , 2018 Share Posted 13 February , 2018 Dear all, If I have understood the available data I have. I have a dilemma that I am not sure how to progress. I have an Air Mechanic 3rd Class Augusts Winter, service number 113610, born 1976 died 1918 (currently awaiting death certificate) Buried at Aldershot Military Cemetery Hampshire. He has two entries on Forces War Records and I have found what little remains of his service record on Find My Past. What I do have has raised several questions which I am at loss to understand accurately or progress. Please see below entry - Under description does this say transferred 3 / am 6 12 17 ? (but not where from - if he was a civilian I'm sure it wouldn't have said transfer) Followed by abbreviation for transferred R of 7 abbreviation Private 2 1 4 18 ? (Not so worried about this as it is his transfer from RFC to RAF) His service number suggests he was an RFC transferee but I can find no other record of him serving anywhere. Also his record shows he transferred early December but the official listing of service numbers allocated shows that his number wasn't issued until January. Unless maybe 113001 started in Nov 17. 102701 to 102742 102702 Nov 1917 AID Examiners 102744 to 109000 Nov 1917 RFC - transfers 109001 to 110000 Nov 1917 RFC - civilians 110001 to 111000 Nov 1917-Jan 1918 RFC - cadets 111001 to 113000 Nov 1917-Jan 1918 RFC - civilians 113001 to 116000 Jan 1918 RFC - transfers 116001 to 117000 Jan 1918 RFC - civilians 117001 to 118000 Jan 1918 RFC - cadets 118001 to 120000 Jan 1918 RFC - civilians Given his age at death 42, I am suspecting that he may have been conscripted - although he could have volunteered in 1914? or soon after. Can anyone help shed any light onto any previous military / RFC service he may have had or point me towards someone or somewhere that might. If anyone has anything on this chap I would be most grateful. Thanks in advance Kind Regards Dean
hmsk212 Posted 13 February , 2018 Share Posted 13 February , 2018 (edited) The muster rolls show that he joined the RFC on 22nd January 1917 and was promoted on 6th December 1917. This is the date he is shown as becoming a 3AM. I would assume that Sc P is the School of Photography. which was at South Farnborough The second line shows that he Transferred to the RAF as Private 2 on 1st April 1918 Steve Edited 13 February , 2018 by hmsk212
