snailybailey Posted 8 February , 2018 Share Posted 8 February , 2018 Hi, I am planning a brief battlefield visit later this year (France / Belgium) and wondered if anyone could recommend a reasonably priced B&B as a base for touring? Anywhere around Albert or vicinity although open to other suggestions. probably looking at three nights for three adults. Much appreciated Glyn
chaz Posted 8 February , 2018 Share Posted 8 February , 2018 apart from the usual suspects you could try a search for "chambresdhotes" or " english owned b&b in albert france". you say reasonably.... we stayed in the same place for a couple of years, problem is it was B&B only, France is notorious for having little nightlife. some regular complaints were, no meals, no restaurants etc. 5pm we were back in the room eating potted salads and watching tv. there was a basic kettle and wifi but evening meals were around £20 extra. look for the recommended ones like Avrils, that can give evening meals and entertainment. may cost a bit more but a better experience, staying in a damp room and waking up to wet walls in the morning isn't fun between November and March. nikp Posted 8 February , 2018 Share Posted 8 February , 2018 Silent Picket at Martinpuich. We are staying there for the second time this year. John and Jennie are great hosts as well as being founts of all knowledge. If you are lucky John may take you for an evening drive like he did with us and pointed out many features including a hidden WW2 Luftwaffe airfield ! salientguide Posted 8 February , 2018 Share Posted 8 February , 2018 (edited) Avril Williams Ocean Villas at ...Auchonvilliers (clue in the name!!) in the centre of the northern sector of the Somme. Good accomodation with breakfast, and good dinners as an extra in a region where evening meals are extremely difficult to find. Admin Michelle Young Posted 9 February , 2018 Admin Share Posted 9 February , 2018 Sylvie and Philippe at Le Clos du Clocher ar Gueudecourt. Good rooms, nice and quiet, evening meals on request or there's a small kitchen area to allow you to self cater. Plus no cats, which is a huge plus point for me. I have spoke to those who won't stay anywhere else and those who won't tread over the door mat. Why not hire a cheap Gite, plenty about and cook evening meals yourself. John Cubin Posted 13 February , 2018 Share Posted 13 February , 2018 Here's my tuppenceworth: Bernafay Wood. Been thirteen times and back again next month. If you want to feel the Somme, this is the place.
