NR72 Posted 5 February , 2018 Share Posted 5 February , 2018 Hi all, I am trying to ascertain what insignia would a gun number on a coastal battery in the UK would have worn in about 1908 ish . I have some T RGA Cornwall shoulder brass titles but what else would they have worn , The "L" with laurel leaves on right upper arm (gun layer) ? Cloth RGA patches on upper arms ? Lanyard around left shoulder if so what colour ? No belt , but a bandolier 1907? , if so would they have worn this when firing the guns? Imperial service badge ? If he volunteered I suppose? Thanks
FROGSMILE Posted 5 February , 2018 Share Posted 5 February , 2018 (edited) Yes to the items of Insignia, but no bandolier whilst working the guns and no lanyard. Gaiters still worn by those units not yet issued with puttees. The L did indeed refer to a qualified gun layer. You could try these companies: 1. https://thehistorybunker.co.uk/acatalog/Shoulder_Titles.html 2. http://www.theregaliaspecialist.com/Great_War_Britain It might require a special order, as there seems more focus on WW2, but with computer controlled sewing machines these are now affordable. N.B. “Coastal batteries” did not wear bandoliers on the gun line (they were not routinely armed individually and thus did not require ‘ready’ ammunition, though some rifles were available to each battery). Lanyards were issued together with clasp knives but both were mobilisation stores. Hence they are inappropriate for 1908. Thanks Depends when in 1908 you want. With the formation on the TF on April 1st 1908, and embroidered titles being order replaced "where necessary" by gilding metal ones in July; your T RGA Cornwall titles would be fine. Imperial Service badge: quite possibly, yet not necessarily. Cheers, GT. Edited 6 February , 2018 by Grovetown Judiciously edited after the fact to appear cleverer than I am.
