Sgt Stripes Posted 29 January , 2018 Share Posted 29 January , 2018 Hello. Can anyone supply me with the dates that Submarine E 11 visited Salonika harbour during 1916. Many thanks
sotonmate Posted 30 January , 2018 Share Posted 30 January , 2018 E11 has no log books listed on Discovery database at Kew as far as I can see ! There are a fair few of other Es. I specified 1916 in my search and eventually looked through all, but no E11s appeared. You might like to take a peek as sometimes these strange glitches happen ! ADM173 is the ref for WW1 subs. Lörscher Posted 30 January , 2018 Share Posted 30 January , 2018 Hi, I may have a look through my notes from several TNA visits, files from Eastern Mediterranean Squadron, but that might take some time and ... What's the background of your question? Family affairs? Photos or documents from that time? Oliver Trier, Germany
Sgt Stripes Posted 31 January , 2018 Author Share Posted 31 January , 2018 Hi. Many thanks for your help with this question. My reason is that for many years now I have had a piece of wreckage in the shape of a shield from the Salonika zeppelin lz85. On the back is the name Act/L Stoker K4374 W Wheeler. I also have a small life saving medal 1930 named to him . I contacted the submarine museum who kindly sent me a photocopy of a picture of him in later life. I was hoping to be able to fix a date when he picked up this souvenir . As the zeppelin was shot down on May 5, the Submarine must have docked there after this date. MerchantOldSalt Posted 31 January , 2018 Share Posted 31 January , 2018 The Weekly Operations Reports by Admiral Commanding Eastern Mediterranean Squadron and the 3rd Detached Squadron based in the Salonika area only mention submarine E11 on about 12 occasions in 1916. These reports do not mention every shipping movement however. The first time is 26 Feb 1916 E11 left Malta for Mudros 21.6.1916 E11 arrived Salonika 3.7.1916 E11 departs Salonika for Kephalo 4.7.1916 E11 arrived Kephalo 11.8.1916 E11 arrived Salonika 30.8.1916 E11 departed Salonika 3.9.1916 E11 arrived Salonika under escort of ERMINE to relieve E25. Still in Salonika area on 8.9.1916 19.9.1916 E11 carried out diving exercises in the Bay 22.9.1916 E11 sailed Salonika escorted by PRINCESS ENA 1.10.1916 E11 arrived (possibly Imbros) this report from 2nd detached Squadron 23.11.1916 E11 carried out torpedo exercises and lost a torpedo, this became subject of a Court Martial in Salonika 27.11.1916 E11 Sailed Salonika for Mudros escorted by ERMINE Those are all the reported movements for E11 during 1916 from the Weekly Ops Reports. sadsac Posted 31 January , 2018 Share Posted 31 January , 2018 Sgt. Sotonate is correct in that that there are no Logs in PRO for 1916 only for 1918. Are you sure that Wheeler served E.11 ?? I have no info that he did in Record Cards at the RNSM. He may well have been on a SHIP where he obtained the article that you have. seaJane Posted 31 January , 2018 Share Posted 31 January , 2018 My grandfather brought home a LZ85 souvenir (my cousin now has it) and he was serving on AGAMEMNON. If the Submarine Museum found the picture did they supply forename and/or date of birth? If so it may be possible to trace his service record. Sgt Stripes Posted 31 January , 2018 Author Share Posted 31 January , 2018 (edited) Hi. Firstly many thanks Merchant Old Salt. The date 21 June - 3 July looks favourite for him picking up his souvenir. I do not know when the Zeppelin was put on show at Salonika harbour but I am sure there would have been bits of the zeppelin for sale probably as soon as it was shot down. I have been up in the attic and had a look at William Wheelers service record (as I said it was a long time ago that I obtained the relic) and he served on HMS ADAMANT April 15 1915 till April 1 1916 HMS EUROPA April 1 1916 till November 30 1916 and then back to ADAMANT November 30 till September 1917. In brackets underneath all the ships is E11. This is verified by the submarine museum which states that he was awarded the DSM "For service in submarines in the Sea of Marmora". Sadly the picture the museum sent me was a poor copy from his obituary. If anyone has a good photograph on him I would be very happy to see it. His full name William Herbert Harcourt Wheeler. Sgt Stripes Posted 1 February , 2018 Author Share Posted 1 February , 2018 (edited) Thank You Lorscher. The names of the ships are very helpful. I wonder how they lost a torpedo. Must have fallen overboard. Edited 1 February , 2018 by Sgt Stripes

Must have fallen overboard. Torpedoes were highly complex and very expensive pieces of equipment. E11 was carrying out firing exercises when practice torpedoes, without warheads, would have been used, these were designed to float when they had finished their run so they could be picked up and used again. They would have been picked up by a ship assisting the submarine and not by the sub which would not have had the equipment to do so. The Court Martial, enquiry, reflected the cost of the loss of the torpedo. TH
Sgt Stripes Posted 1 February , 2018 Author Share Posted 1 February , 2018 Thanks . That's very interesting. By chance do you how did a plane dropped torpedo differ from a submarine launched torpedo. I guess the plane launched torpedo was smaller and lighter.
