russtobin Posted 26 January , 2018 Share Posted 26 January , 2018 I'm researching a man who served with the Royal Scots initially as part of the MEF then moved to BEF What i don't know is where he was between 5/9/1915 and 15/5/16 or which Bn he served with. I have his records but they don't state this information all they tell me is MEF 5/9/15 - 15/5/16 All help appreciated
Lost in Tilloy Posted 26 January , 2018 Share Posted 26 January , 2018 Hi, these dates could potentially suggest the 6th Royal Scots. If you were willing to share his name and number then it may be possible to look up the medal rolls which may help confirm this. Kind regards. Lost in Tilloy Posted 26 January , 2018 Share Posted 26 January , 2018 Hi The original British War Medal & Victory Medal roll states he initially served with the 6th Royal Scots. I looked at the portion of service records that survived on Find My Past and one of the first few pages also states he initially served with the 6th Royal Scots. When that unit was transferred to France it became a composite battalion, the 6th RS joining with the 5th RS to become the 5th/6th Royal Scots. I noted also that Albert Brown was an alias, his real name being Maurice Ellis. Kind regards LIT
russtobin Posted 26 January , 2018 Author Share Posted 26 January , 2018 Thx LIT so he served in the MED with the 6th. Haven't looked yet but I don't think diaries are available for that time..
Lost in Tilloy Posted 27 January , 2018 Share Posted 27 January , 2018 I think you are correct that they are not online yet, though happy to be corrected on this. The war diary for the Western Frontier Force, of which the 6th RS were part, is available at the NA at Kew. I don't know if your local library has access to Major John Ewing's book "The Royal Scots 1914-1919"? If it does then chapter 13 mentions the Senussi Campaign which the battalion served in.
