Trench Map Symbol

I'd be much obliged if anyone was able to tell me what these symbols are on the attached image.

I seems to be a circle with a centre dot and two dots below.

I presume the dotted lines are old trenches or paths?

 

Any help is much appreciated,

Are they not just clumps of trees?

I had thought that at one stage but couldn't find it on any legend. Thanks for your help!

Hehe, right enough. Possibly a few more upright houses and a few less trees than when my Great Grandfather briefly visited the area in 1918 but all in all quite similar!

They are trees indeed but, if they are in red (or blue depending on the map), they depict trees that are additional to those depicted in the map following earlier surveys/printings.
