Has anyone any knowledge of Cpl/ J. Blackburne of the 5th, Manchester Regiment.

He is not a family member but his name appears in the corner of several family photos.

My Grandparents were living in Thursley, Surrey during WW1 and I would like to know more about why the

photos were taken by a serving soldier. I have attached one of the photos to show his details.5a6863ad1f068_WarrenLodgeCottage1916.jpg.2f62eff6536f8613a37e608ad1033786.jpg

Could it be that he was simply a keen amateur photographer or perhaps even had been a professional prior to the conflict.

Witley Camp i believe was a temporary camp in both world wars.

There is a J Blackburne in the Manchesters / RAF

if you have access to certain on line sites (FMP , fold 3) you can check the papers to see if mentions photography

Thanks I have just found this a few minutes ago and it certainly looks like the man.

He started in 5th Manchester Regt and then transferred to RFC. His civilian occupation of photographer also fits nicely.

I have been searching for ages so it proves that you should keep looking. The only thing that I haven't found yet are his Manchester Regt records

perhaps they are among the burnt records.

Thanks everyone

That worked out rather well didn't it. Love it when a plan comes together

Not a bad guess on my part, pre-war photographer. Did he take his skills into the air?

This record from RAF shows exactly that. After he transferred from 5th Manchester Regt.

It has all worked out nicely filling in gaps in my research, thanks to all.
