mickj Posted 24 January , 2018 Share Posted 24 January , 2018 Has anyone any knowledge of Cpl/ J. Blackburne of the 5th, Manchester Regiment. He is not a family member but his name appears in the corner of several family photos. My Grandparents were living in Thursley, Surrey during WW1 and I would like to know more about why the photos were taken by a serving soldier. I have attached one of the photos to show his details. mancpal Posted 24 January , 2018 Share Posted 24 January , 2018 Could it be that he was simply a keen amateur photographer or perhaps even had been a professional prior to the conflict. Witley Camp i believe was a temporary camp in both world wars. Simon
Coldstreamer Posted 24 January , 2018 Share Posted 24 January , 2018 There is a J Blackburne in the Manchesters / RAF if you have access to certain on line sites (FMP , fold 3) you can check the papers to see if mentions photography

mickj Posted 24 January , 2018 Author Share Posted 24 January , 2018 Thanks I have just found this a few minutes ago and it certainly looks like the man. He started in 5th Manchester Regt and then transferred to RFC. His civilian occupation of photographer also fits nicely. I have been searching for ages so it proves that you should keep looking. The only thing that I haven't found yet are his Manchester Regt records perhaps they are among the burnt records. Thanks everyone
Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 24 January , 2018 Share Posted 24 January , 2018 (edited) And that would fit with the timeframe he was at Witley. http://themanchesters.org/forum/index.php?topic=8434.0 And some detail about him here: http://www.wiganworld.co.uk/album/photo.php?opt=4&id=20841&gallery=Byrom+Street%2C+Poolstock%2C&offset=0 Edited 24 January , 2018 by Dai Bach y Sowldiwr

mancpal Posted 24 January , 2018 Share Posted 24 January , 2018 Not a bad guess on my part, pre-war photographer. Did he take his skills into the air? Simon
