am researching a chap in this battalion, the war diary says April 15 -June 12, 1916, mining in the Levantie sector, does mining mean tunnelling or digging dugouts?

I would hazard a guess at setting the explosives for mines, after tunneling

I think it more likely means that the Bn was assisting the RE Tunnellers, who were actually responsible for tunnelling and laying of underground mines. 19th Welsh was a pioneer battalion and so could carry out some non-specialist RE tasks.

PS I think you mean Laventie
