Immo Posted 29 December , 2004 Share Posted 29 December , 2004 Hello, I'm searching for the location of "Scottland Trench" within the british front around Bapaume in march 1917. Anyone who might help me? Immo
Paul Reed Posted 29 December , 2004 Share Posted 29 December , 2004 Can you be more precise about a date and any unit (battalion etc) because the front was very fluid at that time; the Germans had begun the Retreat to the Hindenburg Line and there were numerous minor skirmishes in the villages around Bapaume. Not much static warfare; prior to that during the winter of 1916/17 the front had been some distance short of Bapaume.
Jason Robins Posted 29 December , 2004 Share Posted 29 December , 2004 When you have expanded your question, to assist the forum members, you may wish to examine trench lines (circa October/November 1916) close to the Le Sars to Pys road.
Immo Posted 29 December , 2004 Author Share Posted 29 December , 2004 The reason for my question is more a topic of the Airwar but I thought that the trench system is probably more known to the experts of the ground war. On 11 Mar 1917 No 32 Sqdn.RFC suffered the loss of 6 D.H.2 in the vicinity of Bapaume. One of these aircraft, D.H.2 A 2548 with pilot 2/Lt. A.C. Randall, who was wounded in the following dogfight, claimed a german fighter, probably an Albatros D.II over Scotland trench and was later forced to land near Bapaume. The fight probably took place over the area along the road Achiet-le-Grand - Bihucourt - Biefvillers - Bapaume...
