Guest Glyn_Mo Posted 28 December , 2004 Share Posted 28 December , 2004 I am trying to do a bit of research on my grandfather, who was in the Ross Mountain Battery at Gallipoli and Salonika. He was presented with a medal called the "Gold Medal of Serbia" (I think). I have not yet seen it, but my Uncle does have it. I was wondering if anybody may have any information on this medal/order and how it would come to be awarded to non-Serbs? Cheers
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 28 December , 2004 Share Posted 28 December , 2004 These Medals are the Oblitch Medals,{Medals for Bravery} in "Gold" [ie Bronze Gilt] & Silver. They bore the Effigy of Oblitch a Medieval Warrior who fought in the Wars against Turkey in 1389,& is/was a Serb National Hero. They are suspended from a Plain Red Moire ribbon. It was not unusual for Allied Soldiers to Receive a Foreign Gallantry Award whilst never being involved with the Troops of that Country,as they were awarded "Inter~alia"ie A selection of Awards would be available for all Allied Troops, deemed worthy following any Battle,& Commanders would be asked for Recommendations, which would be "Sifted" & an Appropriate award Granted
