phyoung69 Posted 31 October , 2017 Share Posted 31 October , 2017 I'd like to know what the meaning of "trenchant" in a service record is? Was this simply a reference to the sailors incisive character, or something else? Thanks
horatio2 Posted 31 October , 2017 Share Posted 31 October , 2017 It was the name of the destroyer in which he served, HMS TRENCHANT.
David_Underdown Posted 2 November , 2017 Share Posted 2 November , 2017 And the name outside the brackets is the ship/base that served as the accounting unit (ie which actually dealt with his pay and so on) which would probably help you to find out where Trenchant was based over the period (in several instances the fact he was still actually on Trenchant is indicated by ditto marks within the brackets). So initially he was on HMS Trenchant as a tender to Sandhurst, then to Blake (and during his time on Blake the man was re-rated to able seaman = AB) then Trenchant moved to Colleen then finally Dido. seaJane Posted 2 November , 2017 Share Posted 2 November , 2017 DIDO was a depot ship at Chatham I believe.
horatio2 Posted 2 November , 2017 Share Posted 2 November , 2017 Depot ships: SANDHURST = Scapa Flow; BLAKE = Harwich; COLLEEN = Queenstown; DIDO = Depot ship for reserve destroyers at Portsmouth.
