Danielle Spencer Posted 28 October , 2017 Share Posted 28 October , 2017 Not sure if I have sent this picture before, it shows the names of 2 of my husband's ancestors who fought in WW1, Joseph and Frederick were 2 brothers from Belper, sadly Frederick was wounded in 1917 and subsequently died of his wounds on the 23rd of June in Govan, Scotland. The plaques are embedded in sleepers around the Lochnagar Crater, the sleepers were part of a project to save the path around the crater from crumbling, in order to raise the funds to do this people could sponsor this project and in return a plaque with the details of their ancestor showing was placed on one of the sleepers, very worthwhile project I felt and another way of showing our respect to these brave heroes. Danielle Spencer Posted 28 October , 2017 Author Share Posted 28 October , 2017 We've not been yet but one of our cousin's son's went visited with school and he saw the plaques, I'm hoping that we might get the chance to see them for ourselves. I was amazed when I first heard of the project purely by chance when I received a call at my then place of work, the chap (one of the volunteers) explained what they were trying to do and asked if we did a sealant/adhesive that could be used to adhere the plaques, as avid WW1 enthusiasts we had to invest in this. Looks like you have quite a few heroes in your family - we will remember them. Regards Danielle
Indefatigable Posted 28 October , 2017 Share Posted 28 October , 2017 Good Evening I was there myself in April and just as I was leaving two coaches carrying teenagers from local schools just arrived, they were very keen to explore and were a little miffed when their teacher called them all together so she could explain how they were to treat the memorial. regards Indefatigable
