Ron Clifton Posted 10 October , 2017 Share Posted 10 October , 2017 (edited) Hello Andy The following is from Becke. Army Order 311 issued on the 16th August [1914] dealt with the augmentation of the Army; but this Army Order was cancelled, and on the 21st August Army Order 324 was substituted for it. The latter Order stated that HM the King approved the Army of six divisions (8th to 13th) and Army Troops. Army Order 324 was itself amended on the 11th September by Army Order 382, which directed that the 8th (Light) Division was to become the 14th (Light) Division; the first augmentation of the Army would then consist of the 9th to 14th Divisions and Army Troops. Army Order 382 also authorized an addition to the Army of another six divisions (15th to 20th) and Army Troops. But recruits were pouring in and on the 13th September Army Order 388 gave formal approval for the addition to the Regular Army of yet another six divisions (21st to 26th) and Army Troops. Basically these Army Orders each listed the various units of the eighteen divisions, which by Army Order 389 were to be called the First, Second and Third New Armies (familiarly known as K1, K2 and K3). The lists are included in the document referred to by Jay, and there were a few cases, also listed in that document, where minor changes were made to the original compositions, usually by effecting a swap between an infantry battalion originally intended as part of a brigade and a battalion originally listed as Army Troops (eight each in K1 and K2, and eighteen in K3). Most of the Army Troops battalions became divisional pioneer battalions shortly afterwards, and those that did not were used to form 37th Division, which took the place of 16th Division in K2 because its infantry had not progressed quickly enough in their training.
