Remembered Today:

Albert communal cemetery.

Just visiting the cwgc cemetery in Albert and noticed a plot of what look like cwgc headstones outside the military cemetery. Most are unnamed but some do have plaques etc to French locals. Does anyone know what they are.

A local informed some years ago that the locals used "unused "Cwgc stones .

Thanks Wesley

That was confirmed by a tour guide I was chatting to this week. Apparantly they were 'seconds' donated by the CWGC

Hello from the Somme,

I am sorry to tell you that this is totally wrong !

Reading this, I have asked somebody who has been working for the CWGC all his life : these stones are made of concrete & not of real stone. There are no 'unused' or 'seconds' given by the CWGC.

The concrete  'stones' are 'copies' of original stones ; people from nearby old peoples' home are buried there. And they are not as thick as the real CWGC stones, which are 3" (16 mm) thick. these copies are only 5 or 6 cm 'thin'

Please don't believe all  what locals or even tour guides tell you !

Kind regards, martine
