sassenach Posted 23 September , 2017 Share Posted 23 September , 2017 On a recent coach trip to Belgium, the driver informed us that Talbot House in Poperinghe was still visited by WW1 veterans, though he did add "they are now few and far between." On a previous trip a lady asked what a salient was, and got a long winded answer that essentially said it was something to do with the water table. To be fair they are drivers, not tour guides, so can't be expected to be experts. But even so...

chaz Posted 24 September , 2017 Share Posted 24 September , 2017 reminds me of a trip to Delft pottery and bulb fields, the tour guide recruited, led the bus through a built up square to a dead end. the driver had to reverse a 52 seater back around three sides of the village square ( the direct road was shut for public holiday, as they and the French do) around about half a mile to get back onto the main road. a resounding cheer to the driver, I then produced a Falk plan map of Holland which helped greatly. trenchtrotter Posted 24 September , 2017 Share Posted 24 September , 2017 You need a company that uses specialist guides.
thetrenchrat22 Posted 24 September , 2017 Share Posted 24 September , 2017 (edited) I was in Ieper in September and we stayed in Ieper. Our coach had 2 drivers and a battlefield guide. We were a b&b so that we could pick a different place to eat each night. In in the same hotel was a different coach party, who had 2 drivers and no battlefield guide. They were on half board. Why, when Ieper has plenty of places to pick from to eat. I nearly went with the other coach company in July around the 100th anniversary of my great uncles death when I asked about just paying for b&b and then explained about the lovely town square of Ieper. I was was told it was a half board or not Edited 24 September , 2017 by thetrenchrat22
